Everyone says “Believe in yourself”. Almost no one teaches you how. We do.
Believing is the advice, but learning how is the real work.
We teach the work.
I’m Nishna Pillay, Founder of Rise & Thrive
I grew up in a world where excellence wasn’t a choice. It was oxygen. The pressure started early. Elite-school expectations, perfect grades, constant pressure, the expectation to perform, to excel, to “be someone.” Until one day, at the worst possible time, the weight cracked me open. Depression. Silence. The kind of struggle you don’t show anyone because you barely understand it yourself.
At 18, I did the thing everyone congratulates you for but no one prepares you for. I left home to study abroad, way too young, way too unprepared. Thrown into a different country with the emotional toolkit of a pampered kid. No life skills, just big dreams and bigger struggles. No clue how to juggle work, studies, bills, or culture shock. Turns out there’s a whole curriculum they don’t teach you at school. I learnt adulthood by freefall. I went from pampered to “sink or swim” overnight, and guess what? Swimming wasn’t graceful, but I learned. The hard way. By trial and error… mostly error.
Then life threw me the kind of heartbreak that breaks even the strongest: years of trying to fall pregnant. Torturous cycle tracking, Surgery, Pills, Hormones Injection. Three failed IVFs. Four miscarriages. Grief on repeat. My marriage suffered, My career suffered. My self-worth even more.
Then finally, a breakthrough. A natural pregnancy; Precious and Terrifying… that tried to break me too.
My baby arrived in emergency chaos. No breath. Alarms. NICU. SCBU. Days blurred into weeks. Then five long years of an undiagnosed congenital condition that filled our home with fear, doctors, hospitals, and helplessness.
Then baby number two, during lockdown, with two under two, in a world that had literally shut down. Postpartum depression hit me twice, each time harder.
And just like that, i had to start again, in a place that felt familiar yet foreign. Culture shock hit me harder than I expected. I had to rebuild my identity, my confidence, my sense of belonging.
And then… at 40, I did something I have been wanting to do for years. I rewrote my story.
I changed careers. I chose purpose over perfection. I decided that every crack in my story would become a doorway for someone else. Some people get one big challenge in their lifetime. I got a whole buffet.
Welcome to Rise & Thrive
This is not a story about being unbreakable. It’s about breaking… and choosing to rise anyway.
So I turned my life into Rise & Thrive. Rise & Thrive isn’t a brand. It’s my lived experience turned into a mission.
After two decades in the corporate finance world, I realised that success means little without purpose. And my purpose is to help people build the skills that school forgot to teach but that life won’t forget . So I turned everything I’ve learnt…the knowledge, the qualifications, the wins, the mistakes, the lessons, the bruises, into something that actually matters: helping others rise faster and stronger than I did.
Rise and Thrive is my mission and my heart’s work, so I choose to work with people who are standing at real crossroads in their lives. My work speaks to people who don’t just want to “cope” . They want to grow, rise and thrive.
Each audience gets a tailored experience based on their reality. I support students preparing to step into adulthood, fresh graduates trying to enter the workplace with confidence, women rebuilding their voice and identity, and corporate teams who want to grow through humanity instead of pressure.
I teach the life skills, emotional strength and mindset shifts that the traditional system never covers. Clients come to me because they want real change, not theory. They want guidance that comes from lived experience powered by qualifications. And that is exactly what I bring to Rise and Thrive every single day.

Here’s another truth. I’ve spent my life surrounded by phenomenal women; brilliant, capable, limitless. Yet so many of them carry invisible chains, the kind forged by generations that taught us to stay small, quiet, compliant. I’ve seen the pain up close: women who’ve had to sweep up shattered plates after one was thrown at their heads, who’ve worn sunglasses to hide bruises before the school run. And the most heartbreaking part?
Many believe that’s just the way life is. That it’s normal. It’s not. It never was. And I refuse to accept it.
Because while women have come a long way;from being silenced in boardrooms and homes to leading companies and countries; the old programming still runs deep. The scars of our history live on. The self-doubt. The guilt. The constant need for permission. It’s time we unlearn that. It’s time we remember who we were before the world told us who to be.
So yes, I’ve made it my mission to help women rewrite that story; to live the life they choose, not the one they’re told to accept. Because when women rise, everything around them rises too.
